Today we started working on phase 2 of the Human Impact project. 4 solutions were voted for last week: Composting, Alternative to Plastic Utensils, Sorting/Sharing/Donation Table, and Plastic Repurposing. Each students was placed in their solution of choice and will work in a small group on a component of the solution to get it implemented before the end of the month. Currently we are working on group collaboration norms and consequences to ensure more positive outcomes for all members. HOMEWORK Think of norms you'd like included with your group as well as a possible team name and solution slogan.
In Humanities, the Red and Green rotations completed their Socratic Seminar on The City of Ember’s “Unknown Region”. Students were split into groups of 8-12 students and made inferences and interpretations about the text. Students also began taking notes on Setting. There is no homework.
After students took their final vocabulary quiz for Wrinkle in Time we continued our deep dive into the themes and lessons of the book. Yellow rotation had a “pop-presentation” called, “Who Said What?” where they looked at famous quotes Mrs. Who uses in the book and deciphered their meaning and wisdom. Blue rotation was given a short lesson on finding and properly punctuating textual evidence in order to complete their CSI on setting/mood. This will be due on Thursday for Blue rotation.
Today in math we furthered our math learning from random ratios to converting different measurements. With our powers combined, we made a list of different units of measure and classified them as “imperial/standard” or “metric”. We made sense of metric system and the use of the word “meter” or “gram” while we discussed why we would need to convert measurements at all! We discussed the 1999 Mars probe that failed due to engineers NOT converting measurements, and we discussed the fatal mistakes of doctors who cannot readily convert from pounds to kilograms which could give them the wrong dosage of medication. It was fun! :)
