HumaniScience

This class is a combination of Social Studies and Science that also supports ELA development.

Social Studies We will be acquiring and applying knowledge about government, economics, geography, civics and chronological history through the lens of understanding ancient civilizations and applying that knowledge to our modern world and future civilizations.

Science  A key focus of 6th grade is getting into the problem solving mode.  While learning about Earth and Space, Life, and Physical aspects of science, students are encouraged to ponder, question, research and defend.  In addition to content, we will also develop scientific practices (using models, arguing with evidence, etc.) and explore crosscutting concepts (scale and proportionality, cause and effect, etc.).

ELA  With a heavy focus on writing for different audiences, 6th graders will become proficient in the areas of content, organization, convention and voice through narrative, informative and argumentative writing. We will also be reading and analyzing pieces with an emphasis on understanding themes, central ideas, developing critical thinking skills and providing textual evidence. We intend to read three class novels this year: Esperanza Rising, A Wrinkle in Time, and The Martian.
