Such great work was accomplished today! We began the day with colony vocabulary. Each colony is responsible for submitting 25 words from The Martian to the TCC. These words need to be studied for a test that will be given on Tuesday, May 14th. We encouraged the colonies to create a Quizlet in order to practice more efficiently. Words should be typed up on the shared colony vocab document ASAP!
Then we began Mission: Energy/Solar Panels. We researched the different power sources we could use on Mars to "keep the lights on." Ruling out hydropower, we dove deep to learn more about Wind, Solar, Biomass and Nuclear. Research will finish up in class tomorrow, but students are allowed to pursue their curiosity about this at home this evening.
This afternoon we had a large chunk of colony time to really take a good look at our plans and finalize the cost associated with our surface area. Many of us pivoted to reduce our footprint and maximize the space. Building on Mars is expensive and colonies must be able to afford their plans with the funding they have earned. We also hosted several guest community members who interacted with our colonists, asking them questions about why they made the decisions they did and whether or not they considered other options. It was great!
*Side Note: Compact 7/8 has a new math assignment in Pearson!
**Second side note: Send in your $25 to reserve a yearbook!
***Mark Thursday May 16th on your calendar to come visit the Colony Proposal Showcase! More details to come!
